GUADALAJARA, Mexico—Leticia Valencia, a business owner, enjoyed Shen Yun Performing Arts with her family at the Conjunto Santander Artes Escénicas, Universidad de Guadalajara on May 9.

“It’s a beautiful, beautiful show. A lot of discipline—professionalism, it is once in a lifetime. It is a beautiful show, it is precious, 100 percent recommendable,” she said. “I think it is a privilege to come.”

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company and has grown from one to eight touring groups from its inception in 2006. This year’s tour is Shen Yun’s largest yet, ending May 11 after visits to nearly 200 cities around the world.
“The choreography, the stage design, the costumes, the orchestra, all the music, really beautiful. And they tell you as much about traditional China as they do about China today,” said Ms. Valencia.
Shen Yun’s mission is to revive traditional culture, and as such they cannot perform in China because traditional culture is precisely what the Chinese Communist Party has tried to uproot in its 70 years in power. This year’s performance carries the tagline “China before communism.”
“They are also criticizing communism and the world should know, that we should know because freedom, democracy is something wonderful and it is a world value,” said Ms. Valencia. “It is a human right and so this show not only tells us about the wonders of art but also about a reality that makes us aware of the freedom we have in other places. I recommend it 100 percent.”
Ms. Valendca was moved by what the dancers conveyed without a single word.

“Something that fascinated me was the elegance of the dancers, the positive values, how they speak to us about God, that we should be better people. About compassion, kindness, courage, chivalry,” she said.

“So it’s precious, precious, really everything you can feel. And you can learn by watching it. I really recommend it 100 percent, it is a privilege to have it here and to have come here. I’ve heard great comments and I’ve experienced it.”

Ms. Valendca felt the message was a universal and valuable one.

“It is something that they feel in a very universal way because they talk about the Creator, they do not talk about something specific. In my case I have the privilege of being Catholic, I am Catholic, but there are values that we share with other religions, those that I mentioned.”

“As they talk about the damage that atheism, materialism, ideologies like communism have done to us, where they take away your democracy and your freedom. And that should not happen, right? So long live freedom, long live the beauty of being kind to others. And it’s wonderful, very nice, I loved coming.”
